As winter approaches, forecasts are buzzing with predictions of an extraordinary weather phenomenon known as El Niño. This year, meteorologists are anticipating a particularly powerful iteration, often referred to as a "Super El Niño," that could significantly alter weather patterns across the United States from December 2026 through February 2027.
What exactly is El Niño? It refers to a periodic warming of ocean surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean. This change typically occurs every three to four years and can lead to a variety of weather anomalies globally. The current forecasts indicate an 81% chance of a "very strong" El Niño developing late this year, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). If temperature anomalies follow historical patterns, this event could rank among the largest El Niño occurrences on record since 1950.
Recent updates from NOAA reveal that the El Niño is intensifying rapidly. The Sea Surface Temperature (SST) anomalies have expanded significantly, showing higher temperatures both at the surface and down to nearly 1,000 feet deep. In July 2026, water temperatures in the El Niño zone were already 1.4 degrees Celsius above average, just shy of the threshold needed for a Super El Niño, which requires temperatures to be at least 2 degrees Celsius above normal for three consecutive months.
By August, models indicated a 69% chance that this El Niño could become the strongest on record since 1950. In fact, NOAA has projected that by November and December, average temperatures could soar to between 3.0 and 4.0 degrees Celsius above normal. "Nobody alive has ever experienced an El Niño event this strong," said FOX 35 Orlando meteorologist Noah Bergren. Historical records show that the strongest events include those of 1982–1983, 1997–1998, and 2015–2016, with the latter reaching anomalies close to 3 degrees Celsius above average.
As El Niño continues to strengthen, its effects are expected to ripple through various regions of the United States. Typically, El Niño brings warmer, drier winters to the northern U.S. and wetter conditions to the southern regions. This year, the pattern may be more pronounced. For example, California is likely to experience increased rainfall as the jet stream and atmospheric rivers are pulled southward, supercharged by warmer ocean temperatures. NOAA’s Climate Forecast System (CFSv2) model indicates that precipitation anomalies could lead to several inches of additional rainfall across much of California during December and January.
In fact, Sacramento, which usually sees about 3.5 inches of rainfall in December and January, could see an extra 2 to 5 inches under these projections. This surge in precipitation could result in localized flooding and mudslides if the water management infrastructure cannot handle the influx. "A strong signal for a wet winter is already in view months ahead of time," noted meteorologists analyzing the CFSv2 models.
Interestingly, this winter is expected to feature what some meteorologists describe as an "upside-down" temperature pattern. In a typical El Niño winter, northern states often trend warmer than average, whereas southern states may experience cooler temperatures. This means that regions like the Northern Plains and upper Midwest could enjoy a milder winter, whereas states in the South, including Florida, might see increased rainfall and even severe weather.
For example, Florida could face an exceptionally wet winter, raising concerns about tornadoes and flooding. Bergren highlighted that historical data from previous strong El Niños shows that winters of 1982, 1997, and 2015 produced severe weather events like EF3 tornadoes in Central Florida. Such patterns highlight the complex interplay of atmospheric conditions influenced by this year's Super El Niño.
The potential impacts of this Super El Niño extend beyond the United States. As the event strengthens, it may disrupt weather patterns globally, sending temperatures soaring well above average in 2027. The phenomenon is associated with reduced tropical cyclone activity in the Atlantic Basin but increased storm activity in the Eastern and Central Pacific basins. This shift has already been observed in the current hurricane season, with notable storms affecting regions like Hawaii.
In addition to altering precipitation patterns, El Niño can also exacerbate conditions such as drought, wildfires, marine heat waves, and shoreline erosion. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Northwest Climate Hub has warned that the current El Niño could fuel these adverse conditions, especially as Washington state continues to grapple with drought declared across all watersheds.
Washington has been experiencing dry conditions for four consecutive years, and with projections indicating that this winter could still yield normal to above-normal snowpacks, the situation remains precarious. Jimmy Norris, communications manager for the Washington State Department of Ecology, stated that even with the potential for a drier winter, the last three very strong El Niño events in the state produced normal to above-normal snowpacks.
