In a move aimed at bolstering educational resources, the Gyeongbuk Education Office announced on June 9 that it has submitted a supplementary budget proposal of 6.188 trillion won (approximately $5 billion) for the year 2026 to the Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Assembly. This proposal marks a notable increase of 598.7 billion won from the original budget of 5.589 trillion won, highlighting the region's commitment to enhancing educational infrastructure and support.
The supplementary budget is primarily funded through increases in the general grants and special grants as part of the government's first supplementary budget for the year. Notably, the general grants are expected to contribute 304.1 billion won, alongside 87.9 billion won from special grants, which will help address the financial strains faced by schools.
The Gyeongbuk Education Office's budget proposal reflects a strategic focus on several key areas. A total of 508 billion won has been allocated to increase school operation funds, ensuring that schools can effectively manage heating, cooling, and basic educational activities. In addition to the operational funds, the budget also includes a 17 billion won increase for both school transportation and meal services. The proposal includes 288 billion won for replacing outdated information technology equipment and an additional 188 billion won for initiatives that promote artificial intelligence-based education. To improve the physical learning environment, a substantial allocation of 1.866 trillion won has been set aside for school facility improvement projects. The Gyeongbuk Education Office anticipates that this supplementary budget will stabilize school operations and contribute to bridging educational gaps and fostering a collaborative educational ecosystem within the region. Gyeongbuk Education Superintendent Lim Jong-sik stated, "This supplementary budget proposal focuses on timely support for the necessary financial demands of schools, ensuring stable backing for students' educational activities." The proposed budget will undergo scrutiny during the 363rd session of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Assembly, where it will be reviewed by the Education Committee and the Special Committee on Budget and Accounts. The final decision on the budget is expected to be made on June 26, following these deliberations.
